Michael Grant Henderson is a PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His research sits at the intersection of energy systems, control, and equitable infrastructure planning. He is a researcher in the Energy, Controls, and Applications Lab (eCAL) and the Liberatory Infrastructures Lab (LiLab), where he studies how advanced energy control systems can support more just and equitable planning outcomes for communities. Michael earned his Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2025, with an emphasis in Energy, Civil Infrastructure, and Climate (ECIC). During his graduate studies, he also completed the Engineering and Business for Sustainability certificate, further developing his interest in the intersection of technology, infrastructure, and sustainable development. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Michael is a proud graduate of the Illustrious Fisk University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics. His academic and professional pursuits are guided by a commitment to service, justice, and stewardship, and he seeks to allow his faith in God to inform both his research and decision making. Michael remains optimistic about the future, believing that progress, like the changing seasons, is inevitable.

What are you most proud of in your work or life?

In my work, I am most proud that my research always connects back to humans. I have been blessed with numerous research opportunities in a broad range of fields. Through it all, I have made certain that the work that I am doing is not only legible by all people, but that it has positive impact on all people. I believe that we are all here on earth to help people, as per the Great Commission. So I am therefore proud that my research aims to contribute to the wellbeing of all people.

What are your passions and hobbies?

I am a Christian first, so I love beginning my days with Bible study and ending my day with prayer/ I am very passionate about cooking, especially baking! I love to go line dancing, to karaoke, to play golf, to play tennis, and to go to the gym!

“There is always more going for you than there is going against you”
