Ciku Karanja

Virtual Production Project Manager at Lucasfilm

University of Southern California, B.A. in African American Studies
London School of Economics and Columbia University, M.A./M.Sc. in International History

Over the course of six years and three collegiate degrees, Ciku Karanja has studied media systems in the US and abroad. Karanja’s focus centers on how media systems inform reality across territories, languages, and ideologies.

Her passion for innovation within the film and television industry is rooted in a pursuit of understanding how things work in order to expose the alternatives that will armor future generations to survive the world they inherit and empower them to create a better version for themselves.

Currently, she is working as a technology project manager for Lucasfilm’s virtual production teams. For the past eight years, she has worked with filmmakers, actors, creatives, and engineers across the Bay Area. She has a Master’s in media history, enjoys exploring narrative as it relates to audience, society, and power, and is intrigued by cinematic innovations as definitive and disruptive milestones in our future histories.

She is also the creator and showrunner for Good Questions Lab: an in-house pop-up university at Lucasfilm. It is a product of passion and 12+ years of developing a list of theorists and concepts while exploring learning models that might equip us with the armor to survive systems of oppression and the tools to dismantle them.
